The Carlton Bulldogs girls’ softball team were looking to gain a bit of confidence before entering the 2010 sectional softball playoffs. They did just that with a solid 8-0 win Friday afternoon over the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars.

Upon entering Friday’s game, Carlton had dropped three straight games. Two losses to sectional opponents Silver Bay and Nashwauk-Keewatin, and the third loss to Section 5A power Barnum. The Bulldogs, needing to right the ship, did exactly that in the eight run win.

April Broneak was the winning pitcher Friday as she threw four innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five batters. Megan Bodin pitched the final three innings and allowed only two hits, while striking out two Jaguars.

Offensively, the Bulldogs hit the ball extremely well.
Melissa Clark led the way for Carlton with two hits, including a two run home run. McKenzie Belanger and April Broneak each had three hits in the Bulldog win. Broneak also finished with three runs batted in for Carlton. Christine Eggert chipped in with two hits in the victory.

The Bulldogs finish their regular season with an overall record of 9-6 and will begin sectional play Tuesday afternoon when they host Cook County at Chub Lake Park. Carlton received the number three seed in the southern half of the Section 7A bracket. Cook County is the sixth seed.
