Newman No-Hits Rush City To Begin Playoffs

BARNUM- Barnum’s Katrina Newman threw a no-hitter Friday afternoon to open up sectional play with a 12-0 win at home. The Bombers, the number one seed in the eastern half of Section 5A, faced the Rush City Tigers, who had won a play-in game Thursday over PACT Charter School.

The Bombers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning as they cruised to the twelve run win. Allainie Hanek-Siltanen reached on a one out error, she stole second base, and then scored on a RBI single from Jessica Newman. Katrina Newman reached on an error, which was followed by Karianna Duesler reaching after she was hit by a pitch.


With the bases loaded, Jess Newman scored following a wild pitch. Paige Rilea then walked to load the bases again for Barnum. Emily Thomsen then singled, scoring Katrina Newman. Duesler would score on a second wild pitch of the inning to make it a 4-0 lead with two outs. Alyssa Tate followed with a single that scored Rilea and the lead increased to 5-0. Claire Rodgers then drove in Thomsen and Tate with a triple to left center field.


Barnum added two more runs in the second when Katrina Newman singled with two outs and pinch runner Daron Mainville scored on a RBI double from Duesler. Duesler scored when the Tigers committed their third error of the game, making the score 9-0 after two innings. Barnum added two more in the third with two outs again when Rodgers reached on a throwing error, followed by a RBI double from Hanek-Siltanen. Hanek-Siltanen scored on a RBI from Jess Newman.
Duesler picked up her second hit of game and scored the 12th run on a RBI single to left from Jenna Shanda in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Katrina Newman was the winning pitcher, throwing five innings with ten strikeouts.
She faced only one over the minimum in 16 batters. The only blemish was a walk to Taylor McFee in the fourth inning. At one point, Newman struck out seven consecutive Rush City batters.


Barnum improves to 19-2 overall on the season and are in action again on Tuesday afternoon when they host either Ogilvie or McGregor in the sub-section semi-finals. The Tigers season comes to an end with an overall record of 3-15 on the year.
