Hermantown pulled off a big upset in boys tennis on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks came into their Section 7A first-round match against Duluth Marshall as a definitive underdog, but the end result was Hermantown taking a 4-3 decision over the Hilltoppers.

“Victories by seniors Cory Kolquist and Kevin Danielson in singles played a big role in their tight two set matches,” said Hawks coach Mark
Sisson. “Wins in doubles were the teams of Tyler Michelizzi and Jesse Dyson and Travis Peterson and Cody Neubarth. Those two doubles teams have been great the last half of the season.”

Marshall’s Joey Kronzer took a #1 singles win over the Hawks’ Jeremy Amys, and at #2 it was Matt Goldschmidt of Marshall beating Ryan McEachern. However, at #3 singles Kolquist beat Nick Sengbush 6-4, 7-5 and then at #4 it was Danielson downing Evan Goldschmidt 4-6, 6-2 and 6-0.

At #1 doubles the Marshall team of Dan Letourneau and Lucas Busch picked up a win over Eric Johnson and Naku Aggarwai, but at #2 it was Michelizzi and Dyson defeating John Fox and Ryan Harrington 6-2, 6-2. Finally, the duo of Peterson and Neubarth wrapped up the win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over JB Stender and David Goltz.

Hermantown will now play the #2 seed Pine City on Saturday at 9am in Hibbing in the Section 7A semi-finals.
