Jordan McLaughlin recorded a hat trick and the Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning had just enough energy left to bounce the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team from the Section 7AA hockey tournament on Thursday night.  The Lightning won the game 3-2, but it took double overtime to get rid of the pesky Lumberjacks.

It was the third meeting of the year between the two teams and the Lightning were looking to pick up the sweep against CEC.  However, ideas of a sweep got a bit muddied when the Lumberjacks rebounded from a 2-0 deficit in the second period to even the game.

Trailing 2-0 in the second period Kaitlyn Miller got CEC to within 2-1 entering the final period.  While the defense, and goalie Stacy Nelson kept the Lightning off the scoreboard in regulation, it was CEC’s Cassie Inman who tied the game at 2-2 midway through the third period.

The first overtime saw both teams had a shot at scoring, but neither team finding a way to get the puck into the net.  That changed when McLaughlin recorded her third goal of the game in the second overtime to set off a wild celebration in Grand Rapids.

CEC finishes the season at 6-15-2, while the Lightning are now 15-9-2.  Grand Rapids/Greenway now advances to the second round of the Section 7AA tournament and will play at Elk River/Zimmerman in the semi final round.
