Zach Strom was magnificent in goal and the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team found just enough offense to upset the #8 ranked team in Class AA in the state of Minnesota, Duluth East, on Monday night at the Heritage Center in Duluth.

The lone goal Strom gave up in the CEC 2-1 win was a wrist shot from the left point by Greyhound defender Alex Trapp at 12:24 of the first period.  The goal by Trapp was a puck that Strom probably would have liked to have back, but he steadied himself following that goal and was unflappable the rest of the game.

While Strom was closing the door the Jacks were giving the Greyhounds everything they wanted and more as they out shot East throughout the game, but were unable to break through with a goal through two periods.

CEC finally broke through on a hard wrist shot by Kyle Klatt 2:18 into the third period that got by Gunnar Howg the East goalie.  Klatt’s goal was assisted by Tyler Chicos. Hunter Roberts gave the Jacks their lead with an unassisted goal at the 6:28 mark and then the Jacks relied on their defense and Strom to slam the door the rest of the way.

The final three minutes of the game the Lumberjacks withstood a furious rally by the Greyhounds who hit a post at the two-minute mark, but CEC also had their chances to score on an empty net only to either miss the net, ice the puck, or in one case have a stick break at an in opportune time.  However, in the end the Jacks held on to take the win.CEC is now 7-12-2 on the season while the Greyhounds fall to 14-5-1.
