BARNUM – As a final wrap-up to several Northland area senior athletes career, the annual boys and girls Polar League All-Star games were held in Barnum Monday evening. Blue must have been the color of the day as both the boys and girls blue teams won their respective games.


The Blue girls team defeated the White girls team by a score of 94-82, while the Blue boys team also emerged victorious with a 76-66 win.


The girls Blue team featured five players in double figures led by Barnum standout and UMD bound Katrina Newman with 19 points. Katie Myhre, also of Barnum, followed close behind with 15 points, all of which came off of 3-pointers. Alissa Autio of Floodwood was next with 13 points, while Carlton’s Sarah Aili scored 12 points with 10 of the 12 points coming off of a great second half effort. Rounding out the double digit club for team Blue was Christina Nelson with 10 points.


Other Blue team scorers were Ariana Korpela with 8, Brea Boomer 7, Lydia Pelletier 6, and Katrina Davis with 5 points.


Abby Ray of Two Harbors led the scoring for team White with 13 points. Joining her in double figures were Barnum Bombers Jessica Newman with 12 and Sarah Myhre with 10 points.


Others scoring for team White were Natasha Dragicevich and Maija Rauvola with 9 points each, while Leah Nordvall and Sarah Sample each scored 8 points. Brea Durovec finished with 7, Tayah Johnson with 4 and Ashley Deschampe with 2 points.


Trevor Nummela of ML-WR led the boys Blue team as well as all scorers with a 22 point effort. Esko’s Jackson Lindquist joined him in double figures with 11 points. Others scoring for the victorious Blue team were James Groth and Jared Schmninski with 9 points each. Justin Newman and Mike Austin each scored 6, Nick White added 5, Jordan Smith with 4, and Josh Hogan and Ryan Hutar rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.


Team White also featured two players in double figures with Polar League MVP AJ Blanton leading the way with 14 points. Also in double figures was Jake Adams of Carlton, scoring 13 points in an all around solid game. Others made their way into the scorebook including Luke Thun with 9, Jake Stainbrook with 8, Preston Hurd and Ryan Adamczak with 6 points apiece and Ryan Guentzel with 4 points. Finishing off the team White scoring were Garrett Collins, Caleb Koecher, and Aaron Gustafson with two points each.


A skills competition was held at halftime of each game with Sarah Myhre sweeping the activities by hitting 18 3-point baskets and winning the Lightning competition.

On the boys side, Jackson Lindquist took home sharpshooting honors nailing 22 3-pointers. Nummela capped a dominating game performance by winning the dunk contest with a perfect 10 score from all three judges. Jordan Smith outlasted Aaron Gustafson to win the lightning contest in what turned out to be a marathon event after the field was whittled down to those two.
