CLOQUET – The fifth annual Fire and Ice All-Star Girl’s hockey game was played at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center last night with Team Fire winning 5-2. Although the shots were a bit over what a regular game would be, the game was a hard fought, entertaining, all-out effort type of game rather than an exhibition style all-star event seen at higher levels of competition.

Prior to the game, the skills competition was no contest with Team Ice taking 4-of-5 skills events. Team Fire avenged the 5-4 loss in the skill competition by using their on ice skills to collect the 5-2 game win, sending the entire group of athletes home happy.

The fastest skater was Warroad’s Karley Sylvester who turned in a lap time of 15.1 seconds. The top goalie award went to Shelby Amsley-Benzie of Warroad. Morgan Illikainen of Grand Rapids/Greenway won the hardest shot competition. Glenn Hartman-Mattson of Ely gave the Fire their lone skills win in the shooting skills event, putting 4 of 5 pucks through the cutout in front of the net. Lastly, the team skate competition was also won by the Ice. Illikainen’s hardest slap shot topped out at a blistering 63 miles per hour, but it was not near the record set a few years back by Cloquet-Esko-Carlton defenseman Michelle Maunu who topped out with a 67 mile per hour shot.

Team Fire took a 2-0 lead in the first period on a pair of goals by CEC forward Courtney Esse, with PHM forward Julia Gilbert and Layla Marvin of Warroad assisting on the first goal and Marvin and Emily Larson of Bemidji assisting on the second tally.

Illikainen pulled the Ice to within 2-1 in the second period, but the fire added goals by Marvin, Moose Lake-Willow River’s Kim Ergen and Jane Goldfarb of Duluth East to win the game 5-2. Emma Stauber scored the lone third period goal for Team Ice.

Fire goalies Anja Morris of PHM and Paige Turner of Duluth saw a combined 46 shots, while Ice goalies Sarah Gustafson and Amsley-Benzie saw a combined 57 shots.
