A three-goal outburst in the second period was enough to lead the Hermantown boys hockey team to a 6-2 thumping over Duluth Marshall on Thursday night in Duluth.

Going into the game the Hawks were ranked #2 in the Minnesota Class A boys hockey rankings, while the Hilltoppers were ranked #5.

The teams split goals in the first period with Luke Dow scoring for Marshall and Ryan Kero scoring for the Hawks, but that would be all the closer the Hilltoppers would get as Hermantown exploded in the second period with goals from Scott Wasbotten, Kero and Sam Gibson.  Kero’s second goal of the game was scored on the power play.

Cole Koepke pushed Hermantown’s lead to 5-1 at 1:04 of the third period, but the Hilltoppers bounced back with a goal at 6:15 from Cam McClure to cut into the lead and make it 5-2.  The Hawks ended the scoring at 10:25 on the power play when Eric Gotz tucked home a shot to make the final 6-2.
