In the first round of the girl Esko Coaches Classic, the Eskimos would have a tough opponent facing the 5-0 North Woods Grizzlies and high scoring threat, Darby Youngstrom. But the Eskomos would sneak by the Grizzlies, holding onto a narrow lead and a late game push, to win 46-45.

The Eskimos gained the advantage in the 1st half, grabbing the 27-20 lead at halftime. But the high powered North Woods team would battle back and try to steal the game back, but fell just short as Esko’s Judy Wagemaker hit a free throw with just three tenths of a second on the clock to seal the victory for the Eskomos, 46-45.

The Eskomos were lead by Ashley Bergerson, who scored 16 of her 18 points in the 1st half. Ava Gonsorowski would add 8 points in the victory, Judy Wagemaker scored 7, Hailey Salo notched 6 points, Kailee Kiminski scored 4, Kailee Katt had 2, and Karlie Kulas rounded it out with 1.

The Grizzlies were lead by Darby Youngstrom who lead all scorers with 22 points, increasing her career total to 2,317 points, which is 564 points behind the Northlands all-time girls leader. Also in the loss was Zoe Bystrom scoring 8, Alicia Ritchasky adding 6, Tessa Mankus pitching in 3, and Emily Fultz, Jessica Harmston, and Destinie Villebrun topping it off with 2 each.

With the win, the Eskomos improve to 4-1 on the season. North Woods drops to 5-1. The Eskomos will take on the Hermantown Hawks (3-3) at 4:15 today. North Woods plays the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars (1-5) starting at 2:45 this afternoon.
