The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team continues to put on strong performances as the regular season winds down. On Friday night, the Jacks fell to Stillwater 3-1 in a well-played road game at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Blake Dochniak scored the only goal of the first two periods when he scored at 5:43 of the first with assists to Michael Kreutzfeldt and Kyle Mogren. The Ponies outshot the Jacks 8-7 in the first period and 10-9 in the second as they built a slim 18-16 edge after the second stanza.

Kreutzfeldt gave his team a 2-0 lead at 11:55 of the third period on the power play, but the Lumberjacks responded just 28 seconds later when Paul Ryan pumped home a goal with Jack McFarlane and Ben Michaud assisting to cut the gap to 3-1. The Ponies ended the scoring at 13:03 of the final period on Dochniak’s second goal of the game.

Stillwater held a 15-9 shot advantage in the final frame and a 33-25 margin for the game. CEC goalie, John Scheuer played well again by making 30 saves on 33 shots, while Ponies goalie, Gordon Defiel made 24 saves on 25 shots.

Both teams took just one penalty in the game, but the Ponies were able to capitalize on their power play while the Jacks were not. All the penalties took place in the final period.
