It was a bizarre ending to a great game on Thursday night as the Hibbing/Chisholm Blue Jackets defeated Moose Lake Area 3-2 in overtime. The game winning goal in the first round of the Section 7A playoffs was scored on a penalty shot by Maddy Wheelcor after she had tied the game with a goal late in the second period.

The Rebels took a 1-0 first period lead when Jackie Granfors scored at 6:48 with Emily Franlin picking up the assist. Meanwhile, H/C tied the game at 13:14 on a goal by leading scorer Mia Marturano at 13:14 and the first period ended even at 1-1.

Maggie Unzen gave the Rebels a second lead at 6:40 on the power play with Erin Molberg picking up the assist and it was 2-1 Rebels. However, much like the first period, the Blue Jackets bounced back with a goal of their own. This time it was Wheelcor at 10:38 on the power play with the assist going to Jacque Laliberte and it was deadlocked at 2-2 entering the third period.

The third period was an up and down affair with neither team being able to break the tie and regulation ended with the score still 2-2.

In overtime, Wheelcor was hauled down and after a discussion it was determined that the Blue Jackets would be awarded a penalty shot. Wheelcor left little doubt as she buried the shot and the Blue Jackets skated away with a hard-fought win over the feisty Rebels.

MLA put 35 shots on H/C goalie Dory Johnson, while K.K. Greene made 29 saves for the Rebels. MLA finishes the season with an 11-14-0 record.
