Raleigh Goessling captured the Section 7 Nordic ski championship Thursday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minnesota. Goessling, coming off of a trip from Sweden where he was competing in the world junior biathlon, defeated his nearest competitor by over forty-one seconds Thursday afternoon.

Goessling won both events in the Nordic combined. He first won the freestyle race by twenty-two seconds over Peter Schurke of Ely. Goessling later won the classic event by nineteen seconds, again over Schurke. The two first place finishes assured the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton skier a first place finish. Goessling now advances to the state tournament next week.

Goessling finished first overall, Schurke was second, Jake Dahlberg of Ely was third, Nick Power of Duluth Marshall was fourth and Sam Holmes of Virginia-Mesabi East was fifth. Other Lumberjack finishers included Tyler Goebel who finished 44th, Trey Brademan was 49th, and Duncan Fox finished 52nd overall. Parker Goessling, Dain Brademan and Matt Rengo also competed for CEC but didn’t qualify for team scoring.

In the girls section meet, the top finisher for CEC was Alyssa Michaelson who placed 25th, Molly Meysembourg was 31st, Kelsey Mudek placed 39th, and Korbyn Danielson finished 51st. Elly Siptroth, Alisha Williams and Whitney Wysocki also finished for CEC but didn’t qualify for team totals.

The boys team champion was the Ely Timber Wolves, followed by Duluth East in second and Mesabi East-Virginia finishing third. On the girls’ side, it was Ely via a tiebreaker, Duluth East was second and Grand Rapids finishing third.
