NSO area basketball recap for Monday, February 1. Monday night was a big night for high school sports. Most of the games that were scheduled for Tuesday were moved because of Tuesday’s area elections.

Boys Basketball

Barnum 58 Floodwood 49

Nick White scored a game high of 19 points, in addition to pulling down nine rebounds to help the Bombers win this Polar League Match up at home. The Bombers built a small lead, with Jacob Naslund sparking a big run for Barnum in the second half.

Cromwell 83 Wrenshall 58


Jordan Smith scored 23 points, while Cody Smith added 22 to assist the hosting Cardinals in the Polar League win over Wrenshall. Bryce Schmidt paced the Wrens with 18.

Esko 62 Denfeld 58 OT

Adam Eskuri scored 20 points Monday night as the Eskomos defeated the Hunters by four in overtime. Tied 54 -54 at the end of regulation, Esko came on and outscored Denfeld 8-4 on the overtime stanza.

Mesabi East 74 MLWR 56


The Giants of Mesabi East upset the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels in Moose Lake by 18 points. The Giants win their third straight game, while the Rebels drop their last two in a row and fall to 13-5 on the season.

Superior 93 Proctor37


Superior had ten players score Monday night as they downed the Rails in Superior. Rob Kraft, Joel Lindberg, and Andy Heytens all had 16 points in the win. The Proctor Rails were led by Anders Voss, who finished with 11 points.

Girls Basketball

Cloquet 66 Proctor 25

Cloquet used a 23-3 run over the last 8 minutes of the first half to pull away from the Rails and never look back. Annabel Morrisroe led Cloquet in scoring with 19 points; she also had 13 rebounds on the night. Kara Clouthier led the Rails with 5 points.


Floodwood 80 AlBrook 20

The Polar Bears jumped to a forty point lead at half time and cruised easily to the section win at home on Monday night. Maija Rauvola led the Polar Bears with 17 points on the night, and Kourtney Karppinen was the high scorer for AlBrook with 6 points.

McGregor 57 Carlton 46


McGregor built a nine point half time lead and rolled to the eleven point win at home on Monday night. Hope Sorenson scored 19 points in the win for the Mercuries. Savannah Schramm paced the Bulldogs with 12 points on the night.

Esko 75 Grand Rapids 56

The Esko Eskomos built a ten point (34-24) lead at the half and extended it to 19 to come away with the win at Grand Rapids. Amanda Bergstedt finished with 22 points and nine assists in the win. Savanna Trapp recorded her first triple double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

MLWR 81 Virginia 42

The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels jumped out to a forty-one point half time lead (66-25) to crush the Blue Devils on Monday night in Virginia. This was the highest scoring game of the season for Moose Lake-Willow River.

Cromwell 54 Wrenshall 42

Cromwell jumped to a fifteen point halftime lead and never looked back as they win easily at Wrenshall Monday night. Ari Korpela and Makayleigh Cahoon each finished with 12 points for the Cardinals, while Maria Burcar scored 5 for Wrenshall.
