Prior to Saturday’s afternoon matinee’ game with Andover, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton coach, Dave Esse, was concerned about the opposing team’s speed and maturity.
Andover came into the game with 16 seniors on their roster including Cal Decowski one of the fastest and best players in the state.
In the end, the Huskies had just enough gas left in the tank to pull out a thrilling 2-1 win over the feisty Jacks.

Decowski got things going for the Huskies 3:13 into the first period with Taylor Portner providing the lone assist. However, after that, CEC goalie John Scheuer slammed the door with strong goaltending until the Huskies were finally able to score the game winner with just 19 seconds left in regulation.

The Lumberjacks played a brilliant second period and in doing so they tied the game when Ben Michaud jumped on a loose puck in the slot after a fantastic rush up the ice by Jack McFarlane just 42 seconds into the middle stanza.
That would be all the scoring until the game winning goal.

Portner scored the game winner right after it looked like the Jacks would score on a wild scramble in front of Huskies goalie Matt Ray.
Instead, the puck deflected into the corner and Decowski made a dazzling rush up the ice and eventually got it back to the point where Noah Gandrud took a slap shot from just inside the blue line and between the circles.
The puck was deflected out of the air by Portner and dipped behind Scheuer who never had a chance.
Many in the building thought the tip should have been a “playing the puck with a high stick” call, but instead it was allowed and that was it for the Jacks.

Scheuer played a strong game and, as a whole, the Jacks were very strong in their own zone.
In cleaning up most of the rebounds from in front of the net, the Jacks only allowed their goalie to see the first shot.
Scheuer finished with 33 saves on 35 shots and Ray finished with 23 saves on 24 shots.
