It was quite the night in the Cloquet gymnasium on Friday evening. In addition to a pre-game ceremony featuring the Cloquet Honor Guard’s presentation of a new and larger flag for the gym, there was a t-shirt sale and free throw contest for Haiti relief at halftime.
Furthermore, the Cloquet Lumberjacks put on a show to defeat Mesabi East by a score of 62-36 to round out the excitement for the night.

The Cloquet Lumberjacks outscored Mesabi East by thirteen points in each half Friday to come away with the non-conference win at home. The Jacks opened the game with a 13-0 run and never looked back, using solid defense and good shooting to come away with the 26 point win.

The Lumberjacks did a good job of taking care of the basketball, committing only 10 turnovers compared their opponent’s 23.
Cloquet was rewarded for not making as many mistakes, converting the Giants’ miscues into 19 points. Mesabi East, on the other hand, was only able to convert 3 points off of the Jacks’ turnovers.
However, the Giants did a good job on the boards, out-rebounding the much larger Lumberjacks 37-36.

RaRa Jones had a huge night for Cloquet, scoring a game high 26 points on the night. Jones also added 6 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and a blocked shot in the Lumberjack win.
Chad Calcaterra added 14 points in the Cloquet win, while also adding nine rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

Following Jones and Calcaterra in scoring for Cloquet was Andy Wappes with 9, Pete LaCourse had 6, Ben Shultz scored 4,
and Tim DeFoe, Karl Palmquist and Cody Stevens all scoring 2 for Cloquet.
The Lumberjacks improve to 11-4 on the season and are in action again on Tuesday in Proctor.

The Giants were led by Travis Whiting, who scored 15 points in the loss. EJ Welch scored 8, Cody West added 7, Garrett Larson finished with 4, and Tyler Holmstrom ended with 2 points.
Mesabi East falls to 7-6 on the season and face Eveleth-Gilbert on Monday night at Eveleth High School.
