Lady Jacks Fall in Hockey Opener

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team opened their 2013-2014 season Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to the Stillwater Ponies at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

The Ponies struck first when Hannah Anderson scored 3:46 into the first period to give the Ponies a quick 1-0 lead. Sierra Smith scored a little over 6 minutes later to make it 2-0 as the first period ended the same way.

Following a scoreless second period Allison Biagina scored at the 5:52 mark to make it 3-0. Biagina scored her second goal of the game 3 minutes later to make it 4-0. The Ponies Carlie Hart scored a short handed goal late in the third period as the Ponies start the season with a victory.

Stacy Nelson stopped 29 shots on the afternoon for the Lumberjacks as they move to 0-1 on the season. They are back in action Tuesday night when they host White Bear Lake.

The Ponies start the season 1-0 overall and are in action next Saturday when they will play at Edina. Brianna Hersom finished with 14 saves in her shutout victory.
