DULUTH – It took a big-time play from a big-time player, but the Hermantown Hawks continued to flex their muscle in local boys’ hockey circles on Tuesday night. They came up with a 5-4 overtime victory over local rival Duluth Marshall at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Adam Krause, who is headed to UMD next season, slammed home the game winning goal from his knees in front of the net at 5:46 of overtime, sending the Hawks to a big win on the road.

The game started like a stick of dynamite igniting as Marshall’s Dane Morin scored just 26 seconds into the first period, giving the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead. However, just a minute later at the 1:26 mark, Jared Thomas scored for the Hawks to tie the game at one apiece, with the assist going to Brian LeBlanc. End to end action created two more goals for each team and by the time the first period ended, the game was tied at 3-3.

As wild as the first period was, the second period was like the calmness in the eye of a tornado. Neither team scored as the game settled into a hard-hitting defensive affair in the second period.

Duluth Marshall broke through with a go-ahead goal at 4:37 of the third period when Aaron Rich scored. However, Hawks’ Cody Christopherson scored his second goal of the game with a five hole shot on the power play at 9:17 of the third period to tie the game and eventually send it into overtime.

Max Elstad kept the Hilltoppers in the game by making 46 saves on 51 shots for Duluth Marshall, including 5 in overtime where the Hawks had a 6-1 shot advantage. Tyler Ampe finished with 30 saves on 34 shots for the Hawks.

With the win, the Hawks are now 8-1 on the season with their only blemish being a 2-1 road loss to Andover back in mid December. Hermantown will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to International Falls for a 3:00pm game.
