The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels girls basketball team defeated Silver Bay on Friday night to improve their season record to 4-1. The Rebels are under the direction of 1st year head coach Andrew Young. Coach Young takes over a girls program for Neil Dickenson,
who moved to the Rebels’ boys program as their new head coach this year.

Coach Young has the Rebels off to the best start in over five years as the they head into the holiday break after facing Two Harbors on Tuesday night. “Everyone has contributed this season so far,” Young told Northland Sports Online. “It’s still a new and growing experience but I think we have things heading the right direction,” Young added.

Offensively, the Rebels are playing well averaging almost 64 points per game while on defense they are only allowing an average of 24 points per game. Young knows they haven’t faced the toughest part of the schedule yet but “winning gives the girls confidence” he mentioned to NSO. “A victory gives us the feeling we can win and that is what we want the girls to feel, that feeling of winning is something they don’t forget.”

Young, a 2001 graduate from Fridley High School in the Twin Cities, played college football and basketball at Crown College. He was the women’s head coach at Crown College in 2007-2008. Last year, he was the head coach at North Central University in Minneapolis.

The Rebels are in action again on Tuesday when they play the Agates in Two Harbors. They will also play over Christmas break in the Aitkin Holiday Tournament on December 28th and 29th in Aitkin.
