Dec 17

Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other team. Such was the case on Thursday night when the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks fell 7-0 to the Duluth East Greyhounds in boys high school hockey. The game, played at the Heritage Center in Duluth, was all East from the outset as the Jacks struggled to stay with one of the best teams they’ve faced all season.

The Greyhounds marked their first goal just 3:08 into the first period when Kyle Lutzka scored with assists from Troy Olson and Nate Repensky. Just 18 seconds later the Jacks fell behind 2-0 when Nolan Meyer jammed in a goal to make it 2-0.

The problems got a whole lot worse when Trevor Olson pumped in a goal at 7:09 of the first period, building the Greyhound a 3-0 first period lead. Through one period of play the Greyhounds held a 13-5 shot advantage.

The shot advantage for the Greyhounds grew dramatically in the second period as the lead bulged to 6-0 behind goals from Phil Johnson, Nolan Meyer and Nate Repensky. Repensky’s goal was a power play goal at 16:17. East out shot CEC to the tune of 19-8 in the period.

With the game in running time, Jake Randolph scored the lone third period goal for CEC at 13:33 to end the scoring for the Greyhounds.

John Scheuer came on to play goalie for CEC towards the end of the second period and gave up just two goals on 15 shots, while starting goalie, Boyd Smith, made 20 saves on 25 shots. East outshot the Jacks 40-16 for the game.
