Spartans win Esko Invitational

The Superior Spartans won the Esko Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday afternoon as the Spartans knocked off the defending champion Hermantown Hawks  by a score of 2-0 too take home the championship as the Spartans went 4-0 on the day at Esko High School.

Superior who beat South Ridge, Cloquet, and Warroad went on to face the Hawks who went 2-1 in pool play as the Hawks beat MLWR and Esko, but the Hawks lost to International Falls but did win the tie breaker to play in the championship game. The scores in the championship match were 27-25 and 25-20 as the Spartans win this elite tournament Saturday.

Esko knocked off South Ridge to capture third place in their own tournament, the Eskomos won in three game 22-25, 25-21, and the Eskomos took the decided third game of the match by a score of 15-10.

The Rebels of Moose Lake-Willow River captured 5th place when they also beat Warroad in three games, Warroad won the first game in match by a score of 25-14, but the Rebels responded winning the next two games 25-23 and 15-11 in the final game of the match.

The Cloquet Lumberjacks who received the top overall seed in the tournament, finished in seventh place on the day as the Lumberjacks who went win less in pool play came back to beat International Falls in the seventh place game 25-21 and 25-17.
