A stunning second half comeback gave the Wrenshall Wrens a dramatic 17-14 home win over the Cromwell Cards on Friday night.

It took a late field goal for the Wrens to pull off their victory, but it was a solid effort defensively in the second half that kept the game close enough for them to pull out the win.

Luke Vine scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for the host Wrens and Justin O’Connor knocked the extra point kick through giving Wrenshall a 7-0 lead.  Remember the O’Connor name because that comes into play later in the game.

The Cards then showed their toughness by answering the Wrens with two second quarter scores.  The first touchdown came from Tyler Hakamaki on a three yard run and the second came from Alex Kropp on a seven yard pass from Zion Smith.  Both scores were in the second quarter and the second score was followed by a two-point conversion run by Hakamaki making it 14-7 at halftime for the Cards.

Wrenshall tied the score on a five-yard touchdown run by Dustin Shelton in the third quarter and the extra point kick from O’Connor and that set up the late-game heroics.

With the game deadlocked at 14-14 the Wrens got the ball deep inside Cards territory and with 11 seconds remaining in regulation it was O’Connor booting a 32-yard field goal giving the Wrens the 17-14 victory.

Shelton rushed for 71 yards on 18 carries and Marcus Virginia passed for 74 yards for the Wrens.  Wrenshall improved to 4-3 on the season, while Cards dropped to 3-4 overall.
