MLA Boys Fall To Two Harbors

Dec 5

A slow start proved to be costly for the Moose Lake Area boys hockey team on Saturday against the Two Harbors Agates. The Agates jumped out to a two goal lead after one period and a three goal lead after two periods and then hung on for a 5-3 win over the Rebels.

After playing football all the way to the Metro Dome championship just a week and a half ago the Rebels had little time in preparing for the hockey season. The Agates took advantage of perhaps a little rink rust and forged a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Alex Anderson and Ben Ruberg in the first period.

The Rebels showed signs of life in the second period when Nick Daugherty scored on a feed from Josh Cisar on the power play at 5:22, cutting the gap to 2-1. However, the Agates rallied for a pair of power play goals at 14:27 and 16:47 from Scott Comrie and Anderson respectively as they took a 4-1 lead into the locker room after two periods.

Rejean Carlson cut the Agate lead to 4-2 when he scored on an assist from Hayden Hoffman just 1:04 into the final period giving the Rebels hopes of a comeback. Those hopes were dashed when Sean Graden scored on another power play, the third of the game for the Agates, at the 10:51 mark pushing the lead back to 5-2. The Rebels fought back once again on a goal at 15:04 on a goal from Ville Mattala on an assist by Hoffman, but it was just too little and too late for a comeback.

Austin Lanoue of MLA made 12 saves on 17 shots and Agate goalie, Aaron Lee, finished with 25 saves on 27 shots.
