DULUTH – The Cloquet Lady Lumberjacks were looking to even their record on Thursday night but would not do so as mistakes and poor shooting were too costly. Cloquet fell to the Greyhounds by a score of 68-36 to drop to 0-2 on the season.

Early defensive pressure was costly to Cloquet as the Lumberjacks committed 21 turnovers in the first half that led to 21 points for the Greyhounds. The Lumberjacks did a good job of driving to the basket and getting good shots. However, the shots would not fall but the constant pressure forced the Greyhounds to get in to foul trouble in the first half.

With East in foul trouble, the Lumberjacks were in good position to make a run to get back into the game but could not convert on the free throw opportunities going 8-22 from the free throw line. Sarah McMillen, however, would finish the first half going 6-6 from the line, while the rest of the team would go 2-16. The Jacks trailed at the break 43-20.

The Lumberjacks would not fair any better in the second half as turnovers again proved costly. The poor shooting from the free throw line continued while East rolled easily in the second half cruising to the 32 point win. The Greyhounds finished the game scoring 31 points off of 31 Lumberjack turnovers.

Head Coach Jeff Ojanen told Northland Sports Online “We need to take care of the basketball,” he added “giving them 31 points off turnovers is the difference in the game, along with our poor shooting from the line.” McMillen finished 10-12 from the charity stripe where the rest of the team would go 2-18 overall.

Annabel Morrisroe led the Lumberjacks in scoring with 15 points; Morrisroe also led both teams in rebounding, finishing with 12 for the game. McMillen tallied 10 on the night, Brianna Henagin and Claire Rosen both had 4 points while Jenna Beaupre added 2, and rounding out the scoring was Krista Schmitz with 1 point.

Elsa Lee led the Greyhounds in scoring with 12 points. Nicole Roseth added 10 points in the win, while Macie Dorow and Anne Mahoney both finished with 9 points.

The Lumberjacks fall to 0-2 on the season and will be in action next Monday when they face the Esko Eskomos at Esko. Duluth East starts its season at 1-0 and will play Saturday at St. Francis.
