Cloquet Makes a Comeback
Saturday September 28th’s varsity soccer match between the Cloquet Lumberjacks and the Proctor Rails proved to be sopping wet and chilly as girls slid on the field and the ball spun on the soaked grass.
Tensions between the rival teams were high, and when #9 Britt Zieroth took out Cloquet goalkeeper, Emily Connor, Zieroth was given a red. Both players suffered a headache and a bruise or two.
“Econ” shook it off, determined to stay strong for the team, while Zieroth was forced to sit the game. Proctor then had to play short: ten on the field instead of eleven. Despite this disadvantage, they beat the Lumberjacks 2-0.
Then on Tuesday, the teams faced off again. Tensions mounted exponentially as both teams were determined to beat the other. It was windy and sunny—an advantage and a disadvantage for everyone and quite the contrast from the Saturday’s game.
Cloquet moved the ball well and won 50-50 balls: giving the Lumberjacks the upper-hand. A hard low shot by Cloquet’s Maija Doran, rolled into the back of the net as the goalie lost hold of the ball.
Both teams fought hard, but Proctor was unable to get very many quality shots on net and Cloquet held them off. In the second half, Cloquet’s Kayla Baker scored on a breakaway to win the game for the Jacks.
