BARNUM – Last season, the Barnum Bombers opened the regular season with a 69-28 win over Onamia; this season it was the Bombers beating the Panthers 97-26. The Bombers are hoping for a repeat of last season’s success and a return to the girls state basketball tournament.

“We need to be ready every game,” head coach Randy Myhre told Northland Sports Online. “We have a target on our backs so we need to come focused and ready to go.” The Barnum Bombers finished last season 32-1 overall, with their only blemish being a loss in the state semi-finals to Ada-Borup.

The Bombers looked in mid-season form tonight as they rolled to the seventy-one point win. Katrina Newman led all scorers with 32 points on the night. “Katrina played with what seemed to be less stress tonight,” Myhre would add. “The relief of making her college choice may set her up for her best season ever.”

The Bombers started the game on a 19-0 run before the Panthers finally got on the board at the 11:30 mark of the first half. Pressure defense and a dominating inside game were more than the young Panthers could endure. The Bombers finished with eleven three-pointers, including five from Katie Myhre.

Katrina Newman led the Bombers with 32 points as she continues to close in on 2000 points for her career, Leah Nordvall added 18 points, Katie Myhre finished with 17, and Jessica Newman poured in 13 in the Barnum win.

Barnum opens the season 1-0 and will be in action next Saturday when they travel to the Hopkins Lindbergh Center for the Minnesota girls basketball Breakdown Tip-Off Classic. Twenty-four teams will participate in this one day event. Twenty-two of the twenty-four schools playing are ranked in the top ten in the state girls basketball polls.

Barnum will face New Prague at 12:15 Saturday and is only one of two Class A schools invited to participate in the event. Forty of the top girls basketball players in the state of Minnesota will be playing in this event.
