On Wednesday, Barnum’s senior standout Katrina Newman officially signed to attend and play basektball at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The signing took place at Barnum High School with parents, teammates, coaches, fellow students and news media looking on.

Newman, an outstanding three sport athlete, has excelled in volleyball, softball and basketball. She saw significant playing time as an 8th grader and has grown into a team leader on and off the court. Newman has also been a member of three state tournament teams in the last four seasons, which included a second place finish in 2008 and third place finishes in 2006 and 2009.

Newman stated she chose UMD “because it is close to home and I have always grown up going to Bulldog games.” She also mentioned that she, “looked up to Justine Axtell, a former Barnum Bomber who went to UMD and played basketball also.” Having her parents, friends and family able to see games close to home was also an important deciding factor.

Head coach Randy Myhre commented, “It’s nice for her to have it done. She’s a great player and a great student…and we still have some unfinished business this season we need to take care of.” Barnum is one of the favorites in Class A to possibly bring a state championship back to the Northland.

Northland Sports Online would like to congratulate Katrina Newman on her signing and wish her continued success this season and in her future basketball career.
