Wrenshall Rallies From Behind, Picks Up 1st Win

The Wrenshall Wrens pick up their first victory of the season beating the McGregor Mercuries 27-22. McGregor held a 14-6 lead at the half, and gained a 22-6 lead in the 2nd half, but it was the Wrens who came battling back in the 2nd half outscoring the Mercuries 21-8 to pick up the win.

McGregor got off to a fast start when senior Andrew Demenge ran in a 15 yard touchdown to kick off the scoring for the night. He followed that score up by punching in a 5 yard run to give the Mercuries the 14-0 lead. The Wrens got on the board with a huge run from senior back, Dustin Shelton, who took it 60 yards to the house and cut into the lead, leaving the halftime score at 14-6.

McGregor would gain their largest lead of the game in the 2nd half when junior quarterback Auston Anderson squeaked past the goal line from a yard out, giving them the 22-6 lead. Wrenshall’s offense would go on to score 21 unanswered points starting with a 1 yard run from junior Luke Vine. That would be followed by another 1 yard run from senior quarterback Marcus Virginia, narrowing the score to 22-18. Wrenshall would go on to get a safety, giving McGregor only a 2 point lead and their final lead of the game. Wrenshall would gain the lead 27-22 when Dustin Sheldon made his second appearance in the end zone after a 40 yard scamper, giving them their first win of the year.

The Wrens were led by Dustin Sheldon who rushed 22 times for 254 yards and 2 touchdowns in the victory. Andrew Demenge lead the Mercuries with 2 touchdowns in the loss.

The Wrens (1-3) will be back in action when they travel to Isle to take on the Isle Huskies (2-2). McGregor (1-3) will be back on the gridiron when they square off against their rivals, the Cromwell Cardinals (3-1) at home.
