The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girl’s tennis team wrapped up their season this past week. This year saw a marked improvement for the Jacks, who ended the year with a 7-8 mark despite having a very young group of players.

One of the highlights of the year was in just the second match of the season when the Jacks fell in a very tight match, 4-3, to the Duluth East Greyhounds. During the season, the Jacks pulled out wins over Superior, Duluth Central, Duluth Denfeld and Duluth Marshall.

The Lumberjacks were beaten by Hermantown in the team sectional playoffs
this past week and went on to individual play in the section this week. In the first round, the Lumberjacks got a victory from Kelsey Collier in singles. Collier, who played number one singles all season for Cloquet, was seeded seventh in the section and she defeated Courtney Prahl of Grand Rapids 6-2, 6-1. Prahl has been seeded 10th. In the second round, Collier fell to the number two seed, Annie Mahoney of Duluth East, 6-0 and 6-2.

In doubles play, the Lumberjacks got a first round win from Savannah Hanson and Savanna Ellison who beat Val Youngren and Sarah Cooke of Grand Rapids 6-2, 6-3 before losing to Michaela Cleveland and Linsey Stocco of Grand Rapids 6-1, 6-0 in the second round of doubles play.
