The Barnum Bombers captured their first ever volleyball championship on Tuesday as they toppled the Wrenshall Wrens in three straight games to mark the win. The win Wednesday raised the Bombers season record to 20 – 2 overall.

“This was an amazing night,” Barnum’s head coach Corina Newman told Northland Sports Online. “The girls were so happy with the win tonight…It was nice to win the Polar League Championship at home.”

Barnum downed the Wrens in three straight games with scores of 25-9, 25-10 and 25-9 again. The Bombers finish the Polar League undefeated, going 11-0 in conference play. They will now have a ten day break before the regular season ends next Friday when they take on Braham (2-14).

Senior outside hitter Katrina Newman led the Bombers with 12 kills on the night. She also had a career high seven ace serves and two digs. Jessica Newman had 21 set assists on the evening. Jenna Zymslony finished with four kills and four digs and Candice Paulson added six ace serves in the Barnum win.

“We have one more game to focus on, and then we need to look at the section tournament,” Newman said to NSO. “Playing in section five is a lot different because you don’t see a lot of the teams in the section.” Section five currently has three of the top ten teams ranked in the state class 2A volleyball polls.

The Wrenshall Wrens fell to 1-12 on the season with the loss Tuesday. They are back in action again Monday night when they face Hill City (7-11).

Northland Sports Online would like to congratulate the Barnum Bombers and also recognize the five seniors on this year’s volleyball team: Jenna Zmyslony, Candice Paulson, Katrina Newman, Samantha Parker, and Jaimee Wickstrom.
