Lady Jacks win Second Straight

Kerry Rodd-NSO

The start to the new high school soccer season has been a tough one for the Cloquet-Carlton girls this year.  The Jacks began the season with four losses in a row, but on Tuesday night they exploded for six goals on their way to a 6-3 win over Duluth Marshall to notch their second straight victory.

Kayla Baker picked up the hat trick to lead the Jacks offense and got things started just five minutes into last nights affair.  Baker’s first goal was assisted by Rebecca Hammond.  Baker added her second goal in the 11th minute, just six minutes later, with an assist to Anna Fossen and it was 2-0 for CC.  CC went ahead 3-0 when Fossen tacked on a goal from Caitlyn Doesken in the 20th minute.

The Hilltoppers finally got on the scoreboard right prior to halftime when Megan Coughlan scored to cut the Jacks lead to 3-1.

Baker completed her hat trick in the 47th minute with Maija Doran passing her the ball for the assist making it 4-1 CC.  Doran connected just three minutes later to push the Jacks lead to 5-1 with an unassisted goal.  Marshall then picked up back-to-back goals from Rachel DeWitte and Kelly Alworth to cut the lead to 5-3, but CC added another goal by Doran, her second of the game, to put the game away.

CC had 12 shots on Marshall goalie Anna Thickens, while CC goalie Emily Conner had four saves on seven shots.
