CLOQUET – Tuesday’s girls’ soccer game between Cloquet and Grand Rapids had a lopsided look to it from the start. Grand Rapids came into the match with just two wins on the season, while Cloquet has lost just two games this year, both of which were to high quality Twin Cities teams. The game lived up to its billing with Cloquet getting goals from six different people in the 8-0 win.

Just like voting in Chicago, Cloquet scored early and often. Haley Basset got things started by scoring 3:10 into the game. Katie Pappas put the Jacks up 2-0 in the 10th minute, scoring on a header off a corner kick by Bassett. Courtney Esse scored the next two goals in the 13th and 15th minutes of the game.

With the score at 4-0, Kate Proulx came in on the right side and did a great job of breaking down the defense before passing to Lena Swander on the left. Swander took advantage and scored the final goal of the first half in the 27th minute.

Even with generous substitutions from the bench, the Jacks were able to control play in the second half. Emily Johnson and Sadie Micke scored to raise the score to 7-0. Pappas rounded out the scoring with a second header off of a corner kick to create the final 8-0 margin.

Cloquet goal Kaitrin Rathe made one first half and one second half save to record her seventh shutout of the season. Morgan Bruns made a total of 18 saves for the Thundrhawks.

The Cloquet Lady Jacks are on the road for their next three games. They face Proctor and Duluth Central before a huge rematch against Esko-Carlton on October 10th. The winner of that game will be considered one of the top contenders for the #1 seed in the upcoming playoffs.
