CLOQUET – Thursday night was “pack the stands” night at Cloquet High School and the Lady Jacks soccer team rewarded all who came out with a 4-0 win over Proctor.

In a rare night game, the Cloquet Lumberjacks girls soccer team picked up the win behind a strong two goal performance by Haley Basset.

The game, originally scheduled for 4:30pm, was pushed back to 7:00pm and played “under the lights” by request of the team. Cloquet Athletic Director Tom Lenarz stated the team asked to have a night game for senior night. “The game was originally scheduled for 4:30pm, but we moved a few things around to come up with the night game. We’ve had spirit week here this week, so this was fitting and fun for the girls.”

Spirit week features different events each day.
Thursday saw “pack the stands” night at the girls soccer game, where anyone wearing their youth soccer jersey was admitted free of charge.

Lumberjacks head coach Dustin Randall agreed, “The girls were pretty jazzed up to play under the lights, and they get the day off of school tomorrow, so they are happy.”

Leading the charge for the Jacks was Haley Bassett who pounded in a pair of goals just two minutes apart in the first half. Bassett recorded markers at the 29 and 31 minute marks of the first half and Carri Zeadow added another tally in the 32nd minute providing the Jacks with three goals in just 2 1/2 minutes for a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Kaitrin Rathe preserved the shut out with three saves, while Proctor goalie Nicole Lund finished with eight saves on 12 shots.

With the win, the Jacks are now 7-2-1 on the season. Coach Randall stated he is happy with the team’s progress so far, telling Northland Sports Online “We haven’t lost in our section yet, I like where we are at. However, Saturday’s game against Hermantown will be huge.”

Cloquet travels to Hermantown on Saturday to take on the Hawks in a key conference matchup. Hermantown will be looking to turn things around themselves, after starting the season with a nine game unbeaten streak; the Hawks have lost their last two games to Esko/Carlton and Denfeld.
