Lumberjacks win home opener with victory over Superior

The Cloquet girls tennis team opened their 2013 home season with a 6-1 victory over Superior in a Lake Superior Conference match Tuesday afternoon in Cloquet.  The Lumberjacks swept the four singles matches on Tuesday afternoon and won two out of the three doubles matches at Cloquet High School.

Breanne Baker won the number one singles with a 6-3 and 6-1 win over Carley Weber, Lora Chalich defeated Emma Buckley 6-0 and 6-0, it was Rosalie Lundquist a 6-2 & 6-1 winner over Hannah Isabella, and in the last singles match it was Hailey Martin a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Sydney Clikeman.

It was Allie and Hannah Thal picking up the lobe win on the day for the Spartans as the Thal’s defeated Katrina Smith and Courtney Ketola. The Thal’s  won the first match 6-2, Ketola and Smith came back to win the second match 6-1 before the Superior duo regrouped and won the last set by a score of 6-4.

The Lumberjacks Katelyn Litke and Arica Sheff won their match 6-3, 6-0 over Monika Soland and Hannah Anderson, and The Jacks picked up their sixth win of the afternoon when Annika Hammit and Lexi Robidieux defeated Sarah Urban and Jessica Sahoula by a margin of 6-0 and 6-1.

The Lumberjacks started their season Monday at the Mora Invitational where the Lady Lumberjacks fell to Aitkin and Chisago Lakes, but they did have a victory over host Mora in the Invitational.

The Lumberjacks will be back in action on Thursday when they will face Duluth East in Duluth. The Spartans will be back in action on Wednesday when they will face Osceola in Osceola on Wednesday afternoon.
