Cloquet Soccer Scores Nine Goals In Win Over Two Harbors

The Cloquet High School mascot is the Lumberjack, but on Thursday it may have well been the bumble bees because the Jacks spent so much time around the Two Harbors goal in girls soccer that it resembled a swarm of killer bees looking to attack as the Jacks picked up a 9-3 win.

“It thought we came out ready to play and we really controlled the play right from the start,” commented Cloquet coach Dustin Randall. “Two Harbors has the ability to score goals and they showed it, taking advantage of a few defensive breakdowns on our part.”

It didn’t take long for the Jacks to jump on the Agates as Lena Swander pounded in a goal in the fifth minute. Swander’s goal was followed by a Katie Pappas tally in the 8th minute and a marker from Emily Johnson in the 16th minute as the Jacks built a 3-0 edge.

Sierra Tietge managed to stem the tide for the Agates in the 27th minute to cut the lead to 3-1, but Johnson pounded in her second goal in the 35th minute and Courtney Esse added a goal just three minutes later and Cloquet took a 5-1 lead into halftime.

Lacey Myrdal scored early in the second half for the Agates to pull Two Harbors to within 5-2, but Jessie Ryan Emily Rikkola and Kelsey Anderson all pumped in goals for the Jacks in an 11-minute span to push the lead to 8-2 for the Jacks.

Tietge scored for the Agates in the 64th minute, but the Lumberjacks responded once more with a goal from Haley Bassett just a minute later for the final goal of the wild game.

“We worked hard this week on creating chances and finishing those chances and things went our way in this game,” explained Randall. “It was really nice to see some goals from some of our younger players and I’m really proud and excited for them. It was also nice to see Katie Pappas scoring a header from a corner kick which was the strength of our team last year and I’m glad to see we are getting back to that now.”
