The FDLTCC Thunder volleyball team dropped their third straight series Wednesday night. The loss to Vermillion Community College came as a surprise as to the Thunder because they beat them handily a little over a week ago. The Thunder and the Voyageurs met in a rematch at the Lester Jack Briggs Cultural Center Gymnasium. Even after a fast start by the Thunder, it was Vermillion who would come away with the win.

The Thunder jumped to an early lead in game one, with their largest margin being eleven points at 17-6. They then would go on to secure the 25-18 win and lead the match 1-0. However, Vermillion came out strong in the second game, leading by as many as eight points. The Thunder responded by narrowing the Voyageur lead to one at 14-13.
Vermillion would pull away and win game two with a score of 25-18.

“We didn’t return serves very well tonight,” head coach Mike Patenaude told Northland Sports Online. “We had too many unforced errors tonight…We need to be more consistent and show more fire on the court.”

The third game would see both teams battling back and forth, switching off who held the lead. The Thunder’s largest lead was 9-6, but Vermillion would fight back and take the third game 25-18. The fourth game of the match saw Vermillion jump out to a huge 18-7 lead. However, the Thunder stormed back, eventually tying the game at 22-22. In the end, the Voyageurs would come away with the win in an exciting fashion at 25-23.

The Thunder falls to 1-3 on the season and will be on the road for their next seven contests. They are in action next Wednesday at Itasca Community College at 6:30 pm. The Thunder’s next home game is Wednesday, October 7th when they host Itasca Community College.
