Despite a 48-20 shot advantage the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to the Hopkins Royals on Tuesday night.

The Royals opened the scoring with a Matt Hines goal on the power play at 13:54 of the first period, but that would be the only goal of the period.

Jonah Shoemaker made it 2-0 just 55 seconds into the second period, but before the end of the period the Jacks responded with a Karson Kuhlman goal from Beau Michaud and Westin Michaud that cut the gap to 2-1 after the second period.

Tim Weiner gave the Royals a 3-1 edge with a goal at 1:51 of the third period. CEC answered with a Westin Michaud goal on the power play at 6:20 with Drew Dincau adding the assist and the lead was at 3-2 in favor of Hopkins. The Royals again answered the CEC goal with another power play goal from James Copouls to make it 4-2. Beau Michaud got the Jacks to within 4-3 with a goal at 13:11, but Weiner ended the game with an empty net goal with one second remaining to end the scoring.

Justin Ketola made 16 saves, and Zack Strom added one save for CEC in the non-conference loss.
