CLOQUET- It seemed like there was a cover over the basket in Cloquet Friday night in the first half of the Lumberjacks 51-38 loss to Ashland. The Lumberjacks, who led 5-4 early in the game against the Oredockers; saw themselves go 14 minutes without a basket as the Oredockers jumped out to a 24-5 lead before Cloquet managed to score again with a little over a minute remaining in the first half.

Cloquet who shot just 15 % from the floor in the first half found themselves trailing by a score of 26-9 at the break. The Lumberjacks used their height advantage to keep in the game in the first half as the Lumberjacks out-rebounded Ashland in both the first half and for the game as they collected 36 rebounds to the Oredockers 28.

Cloquet scored the first five points of the second half and would battle themselves back into the game, trailing only by four points midway through the second half. However the Oredockers answered every run the Lumberjacks made at Ashland and would extend their lead normally back to the 10 point range.

Often in the second half the Lumberjacks hurt themselves with turnovers finishing with 26 on the night and their shooting; which did improve, but still was only 37% in the second half. Cloquet missed 10 shots within three feet of the basket which did not help in the Lumberjacks comeback.

Jaiden Cofield led all scorers for the Lumberjacks by finishing with 18 points on the night. Kenzie Rathe finished with 7, Avery Bieri added 6 points, Kassidy Steen finished with 4, and it was Kaylee McMillen who scored 3 points to close out the Lumberjacks scoring Friday night.

The Oredockers were led by Nicole Huber, who finished with 16 points on the night, while her sister Kaela added 14 in the win. Brianna Tody, Sophie Habas, and Olivia Bretting all scored 5 points; Jenna St. Germaine added 4, and it was Lucia Agostine ending the Ashland scoring with 2 points.

The Lumberjacks fall to 1-3 on the season and they are back in action again on Tuesday night when they l host the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks in a sectional contest. Friday night the Lumberjacks will face the Deer River Warriors again at Cloquet High School.
