Karson Kuhlman pumped home two goals while James Newgren and Koby Bender each added a goal and an assist as the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team dumped the visiting South St. Paul Packers 6-3 in boys hockey on Thursday night in Cloquet.

Beau Michaud carried the hot early hand for the Jacks by scoring at 6:02 of the first period with James Newgren making a nifty assist while on the ice from behind the net. Kuhlman gave CEC a 2-0 lead at 14:06 of the first period with an unassisted tally and then Newgren made it 3-0 with a marker at 15:55 from Ryan Lind and Michaud.

Koby Bender got things going in the second period at 3:59 with Dalton Johnson adding an assist to push the CEC lead to 4-0. The Jacks went up 5-0 at the 10:06 mark when Kuhlman picked up his second goal, this time assisted by Drew Dincau. At 14:56 the Packers cut the lead to 4-1 on a goal by Dan Pietruzewski, but the Jacks bounced back with just 11 seconds remaining in the second period when Eric Peterson scored from Kyle Klatt and Bender.

Leading 6-1 entering the third period the Jacks ran into a bit of trouble when the Packers notched back-to-back goals by Alex Miller and Pietruzewski at 4:43 and 6:45. CEC head coach Dave Esse called a time out to get the Jacks back on track after the second goal and the Lumberjacks were able to finish out the game with a solid home win at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

CEC goalie Justin Ketola finished with 15 saves on 18 shots, while Grant Amelse had 35 saves on 41 shots for the Packers.

The win moves the Jacks to 3-1 on the season; they will face a good test on Saturday when they travel to White Bear Lake for a 3:00pm game.
