Men’s Soccer Advances to UMAC Championship with Victory over Vikings

Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) recorded a hat trick and Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) added a pair of assists as the St. Scholastica men’s soccer team defeated Bethany Lutheran 6-1 victory in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament semifinal action at Saints Field on Tuesday.


The Saints quickly took control of the game as their first goal of the game came in the 11th minute as Watt assisted Brandon Scott (Farmington, Minn. /Farmington HS) on his seventh goal of the season. Shortly after, Watt tallied another assist as Jenkins buried his first of three goals of the game. Kasey Bacso (Plymouth, Minn. /Wayzata HS) was also credited with the assist. Despite the Saints’ peppering Bethany Lutheran keeper Noah Heidorn with nine shots in the first half, the score remained just 2-0 headed into half.


However, the Saints would come out strong in the second half, tallying four goals off of 15 shots. Jenkins opened up the second half by scoring just 59 seconds in courtesy of a Brandon Scott (Farmington, Minn. /Farmington HS) assist. Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) would find the back of the net for his 14th goal of the year in the 60th minute to push the score to 4-0. Jenkins would then complete the hat trick in the 76th minute off of a Trochimchuk assist.


For Jenkins, his three goals set the program record for goals in a season. He now sits at 25, breaking the previous record of 22 held by Chris DeMorett.


The Vikings got on the board as Michael Loguercio scored off of the Juan Garcia assist in the 81st minute. The Saints would add an own goal in the final minute to push the score to the final of 6-1.


Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) saved one shot as he recorded his 10th shutout of the season. Heidorn made five saves in the loss for the Vikings, who finish the season with a record of 9-11-1.


The Saints are now 17-4-0 and advance to the championship game this Saturday to play the University of Minnesota Morris for the UMAC title. The Cougars advanced to the UMAC Championship by defeating Northwestern College 5-3 in a shootout. Game time will be 11:30 a.m. and all of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
