Vogler, Bulldogs Roll Past Minnesota Crookston 38-14

Another week, another Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division opponent, another convincing football victory.

Since being dealt a 51-49 buzzer-beater loss by St. Cloud State University one month ago, the University of Minnesota Duluth has been on a tear, reeling off four straight one-sided wins, the latest of which was a 38-14 triumph at the expense of the University of Minnesota Crookston Saturday afternoon. Senior quarterback Chase Vogler equaled a career-high with three rushing touchdowns and threw for another score for the host Bulldogs, who took a 38-0 lead into halftime at a soggy Ed Widseth Field en route to improving to 8-1 on the season.

Vogler, now 44-5 as a collegiate starter, completed 10 of 15 passes for 114 yards, but was picked off once. He opened the scoring with 2:30 to go in the first quarter when he hooked up on a six-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Jeremy Reierson.

No. 8 UMD chewed up 283 yards on the ground while holding the Golden Eagles (1-8) to just 56 yards on 27 carries. Junior running back Jerron Johnson came off the bench to rush 11 times for a team-leading 95 yards while sophomore Austin Sikorski added 75 yards on 11 attempts.

Both teams had issues with ball control, in part because of the wet conditions. UMD fumbled five times (losing two of those) and the Golden Eagles four times — one of which was recovered by sophomore inside linebacker Gavin Grady in the Minnesota Crookston end zone for a first-quarter touchdown.

UMD will return to James S. Malosky Stadium next Saturday afternoon to host the University of Mary before putting the wraps on the 2012 regular season one week later at home against Northern State University.
