Proctor Heading To Section 7AAA Championships

The Proctor Rails used solid defense and timely scoring on Saturday afternoon to beat the Broncos of International Falls and move into the Section 7AA Championship Game, where they will face the Esko Eskomos with a trip to the state football tournament on the line.


The Rails scored first on Saturday as it was Alex Greene who broke away and ran for a 56 yard touchdown run; a Jack Nikko extra point made it 7-0 in favor of the Rails with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter.


The Rails held the Broncos scoreless in the first half as the Rails took a 7-0 lead into the break at halftime. The Rails came out again in the second half and continued with strong defense which managed to fluster the Broncos.


Gunner Anderson, the International Falls Broncos quarterback was intercepted four times by the Rails as he finished 3-17 passing and again the Rails defense stalled many Broncos drives. Offensively the Rails continued their strong rushing game as they pounded out 373 yards on the ground for the day.


Alex Greene scored his second touchdown of the game the third quarter, this time on a 3 yard run. Brody Nordquist scored the two point conversion which made it a 15-0 Proctor lead.


Jimmy Merling added two more touchdowns in the third quarter with runs of 25 and 13 yards on the day. Merling finished with 129 yards rushing Saturday, second to Alex Greene who had 149 yards for the Rails. Proctor pounded out 383 yards on the ground in the victory.


Proctor, with the win improves to 8-1 on the season as they will face the Esko Eskomos in the section championship game on Thursday night at UMD. The Rails will be seeking a return trip to the state football tournament for the first time since 2008 and Esko seeks their first trip to the state tournament since 2005.
