FDLTCC Volleyball Wins Third Match of the Season

The Fond du Lac Community College Womens Volleyball team picked up its third win on the season and its second conference victory this fall as the Lady Thunder knocked off Vermillion Community College Saturday at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet.


The Thunder swept the Ironwomen in three straight games. The Thunder won the first game of the match 25-23 in a very close tight match. The second game of the match saw the Thunder come away with another victory, this time a 25-14 win that wasn’t quite as close as the first game of the match.


The Thunder went for the sweep in the third game of the set as the Thunder picked up another tight close contest as the Thunder won 25-22 to take the sweep of the Ironwomen Saturday afternoon in Cloquet.


With the victory, the Thunder improve to 3-13 overall on the season and they move to 2-12 in conference play. Both of the conference victories this season have come over Vermillion Community College. The Thunders other victory was over Vermillion as well but it did not count as a conference victory.


The Thunder were led by Kaitlyn Psick who finished with 30 set assists and 16 digs on the day. Kourtney Karppinen had 10 kills and 14 digs, while MaKayleigh Cahoon added 9 kills and 12 digs. Marita Yellowhammer finished with 7 kills, 5 digs, 2 ace serves; and Candice Paulson had 7 kills and 5 digs for the Thunder.


The Thunder will close out the regular season at home on Wednesday night when they host Itasca Community College at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. The three wins this season tops last season’s winning total and ties the most wins in a season by the Thunder.


Members of this year’s Thunder team include Carlton High School alum Marita Yellowhammer; from Cloquet, Haley Sobczak, Shawna Jones, and Mikayla Kielty; Dayna Elmer and MaKayleigh Cahoon from Cromwell, Kaitlyn Psick and Kourtney Karppinen from South Ridge, Hanna Staffe of Hinckley-Finlayson, and Candice Paulson and Samantha Parker from Barnum.
