Corey Veech Field in Hermantown was a busy place yesterday afternoon as the Hermantown Hawks boys and girls soccer teams hosted a doubleheader with the Duluth East Greyhounds. The Greyhounds took both ends of the doubleheader winning 3-1 in the girls game and 3-0 in the boys contest.

The boys game was tied 0-0 after the first half of play before East exploded for three unanswered goals in the second half. Willey Atol got the Greyhounds the only goal they would need in the 45th minute in unassisted fashion. Trygve Rennan scored in the 60th minute and Corey Erickson wrapped up the Greyhound’s scoring in the 70th minute.

The Hawks got a 12 save effort from Josh Lenard, who faced 15 Greyhound shots. East goalie Daniel Spooner made four saves to notch his sixth consecutive, and 11th overall shutout.

East jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first half and cruised to a 3-1 victory in the girls game by pumping 18 shots on Hawks goalie Courtney Simmons who was called on to make 15 saves.

Hailey Hoff gave Hermantown the early edge when she slammed home a goal on a pass from Alyssa Siljendahl in the 10th minute. East answered back in the 19th and 24th minutes of the first half on goals from Emma Spooner and Emily Anderson as they built a 2-1 lead.

The lone goal of the second half was scored by Anna Rauzi in the 45th minute of the game.

East netminder Sarah Lyle finished with nine saves on 10 Hermantown shots.
