There are times when a tie can seem like a victory. Such was the case yesterday afternoon when the young Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer team tied the Duluth East Greyhounds. The Jacks, who lost a ton of experience to graduation last year, fought to a 0-0 overtime draw at home against East showing that when they play tight defensively they can play with the big schools.

“I think today was the best defensive performance we have seen. Guys were organized, stuck to the game plan, and stayed behind the ball; we had nine guys behind the ball today. CEC Head Coach Archie Clark told Northland Sports Online following the game.

Halen Danielson, and his entire team, slammed the door shut on the offensively potent Greyhounds. Perhaps the biggest play of the game came at the end of the first overtime when Danielson jumped up and deflected what appeared to be a sure goal over the cross bar preserving the tie.

“We tried to score coming off the break and there were a couple of times when we could have actually scored. East came in at 10-2-2, so I’m pretty proud of the boys today,” stated Coach Clark.

For the game Danielson finished with 13 saves, while Daniel Spooner finished with four saves for the Greyhounds.

The Lumberjacks, who made their first state tournament appearance in boys soccer last season, are now 6-6-2, while the Greyhounds are now 10-2-2 on the season.

The Jacks will close out the 2012 regular season on home Thursday with a 7:00pm game against Proctor on Senior Night.
