After opening their season with losses to Cloquet and Moose Lake-Willow River, the Barnum Bomber football team has rebounded with three straight wins including a 52-13 stomping of Braham on Friday night in Barnum.

The Bombers opened the first quarter with a Danny Warpula 16-yard run, a Zach Peterson 25 yard touchdown run and another Warpula touchdown run of 49 yards. Warpula added the two-point conversion on his first score, Brandon Newman added a conversion run on Peterson’s touchdown and finally Cody Shelgren two-point conversion run to make it 24-0 after just one quarter of play.

It was more of the same for Barnum in the second quarter when Peterson scored on a one-yard plunge and Shelgren on a 74-yard pass from Newman. Peterson tacked on the two-point conversion on the first score of the second quarter, while Colton Selix added the conversion run after the second touchdown. At the half the Bombers led Braham 40-0.

Warpula, who ran for 176 yards in the game, added a 27-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and that was followed by a Shelgren five-yard scamper for a score and Barnum’s lead was 52-0. Braham managed one late score in the third quarter and another score in the fourth quarter, but the game was already decided by the potent Barnum offense.

Shelgren also had a big night for Barnum with 101 yards rushing and 74 yards receiving.

Since playing tough, but falling to the Class AA and state runner-up ML-WR Rebels and Class AAAA Cloquet by a combined total of 21 points; the Bombers have outscored their opponents 122-28 in the past three games.

The Bombers will travel to Mesabi East next Friday. The Giants are just one of four Class A opponents on Barnum’s schedule this season. Their other four regular season games are or will be against Class AA and Class AAAA teams, which should help out come playoff time.
