A four-goal outburst and then cruise control were plenty for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer team on Tuesday. The Jacks rode those four first-half goals to a 4-0 road victory over Hibbing/Chisholm.

The key to the Jacks win was Westin Michaud, who had a goal and added two assists in leading the offense of CEC. Michaud scored the first goal of the game in just the second minute with an assist to Ben Pietsch. That would be the only goal CEC would need as the defense slammed the door shut on the Blue Jackets and CEC netminder Halen Danielson made 12 saves to pick up the shut-out.

In the 6th minute the Jacks went up 2-0 when Jim Peterson recorded a goal with Michaud notching his first assist. Three minutes later it was Pietsch scoring with Brock Anderson adding the assist and it was 3-0. CEC’s final goal was scored in the 25th minute when Alex DeRocher scored on an assist by Michaud. DeRocher’s goal for CEC was the final goal of the game.

Most impressive for CEC this season is that the Jacks are now 5-3-2 on the season and have been tough against Northern Minnesota teams all season. That is impressive because of the massive loss of talent that Jacks had off their roster from a year ago through graduation.

Last year was the first year a CEC team went to the state tournament and it was thought that because of the attrition of their roster they would suffer this season, but CEC Head Coach Archie Clark has his team playing at a high level as they build towards the playoffs.
