The Hermantown Hawks girls tennis team started off slowly this fall, dropping their first five matches; but they have come back strong and playing very tough in their next seven matches, winning three of those seven. Tuesday it was another close match against the Aitkin Gobblers but in the end Aitkin knocked off Hermantown by a score of 4-3.

The Hawks split with the perennial powerful Gobblers in the singles matches with Danielle Luke and Bailey O’Connell winning their matches. Luke won 1-6, 6-1, and 6-3 over Elise Courtmanche, and it was O’Connell beating Marissa Kinzer 6-2, and 6-3. Madelyn Miller and Steph Collins both lost in straight sets to the Gobblers.

The doubles matches saw the Hawks only victory coming from Elizabeth Carlson and Brianna Garcia-Meyers as they defeated Lexi Liljenquist and Paige Westerlund by a score of 6-1 and 6-4. Lisa Anderson and Lydia LaHmann-Sharbonda defeated Anna VanDeelen and Mariah Ruhanen 7-5 and 6-2 for one Aitkin doubles win and the other Gobbler doubles win came from Taylor Smith and Amy Chalich as they knocked off Jordan Cuva and Elizabeth Heehn 7-5 and 6-2.

The Hawks fall to 4-9 overall on the season and they will be in action again Thursday afternoon when they will play the Marshall Hilltoppers at Marshall School in Duluth. The Gobblers improve to 5-9 on the season and they will play next Tuesday again when they will face the Pierz Pioneers at Pierz High School.
