Wyatt Begay rushed for a touchdown and caught a pass for a score in helping to lead the Esko football team to a 36-28 road win over Eveleth-Gilbert on Friday night.

Begay scored the lone first quarter touchdown on a four-yard pass from Marc Peterson and Riley Mudek ran for the two-point conversion giving Esko an 8-0 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter it was more of Begay, this time on a 30-yard touchdown scoot, that gave Esko a 14-0 lead after the failed conversion attempt. Esko went up 20-0 when Ryan Holte plunged in from the two-yard line midway through the second quarter, but the Golden Bears cut the lead to 20-6 when Will Olson latched onto a pass from Sam Roberts and bolted 40-yards to the score. At halftime it was Esko leading 20-6.

Mudek got the second half scoring going when he slashed in from 35-yards out and then he added the conversion run giving Esko a 28-6 lead, but again the Golden Bears respond when Zach Wood caught a Roberts pass for a 15-yard score and the Roberts found Wood in the end zone for the two-point conversion pulling E-G to within 28-14.

Garrett Iverson provided Esko with their final score of the game on a 41-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and then Iverson added the conversion run to make it 36-14 Esko.

Again the Golden Bears responded with back-to-back scores in the fourth quarter from Cole Jackson on a four-yard run and Wood on an 11-yard pass from Roberts to cut the lead to 36-28, but that would be all the closer E-G could get to the Eskomos who improved to 2-0 on the season.
