The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls’ tennis team got a nice surprise this week with the arrival of Savannah Ellena. Ellena, who had gone to school in Edina, moved to Cloquet recently and her addition has given the Jacks added depth and a bit of a boost.

“Savannah has been a nice addition to the team,” said CEC coach Steve Rickstrom during the match last night. “We didn’t know what kind of player she was, but she fits into the #3 spot pretty well.”

Kelsey Collier of CEC won her #1 singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Rikki Berchild. Michaela House of CEC was a winner at #2 singles with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Natalia Burger and Savannah Hanson won at #3 singles by beating Sarah Nikstad 6-1, 6-0. The only loss for CEC at singles came when Steph Campbell dropped her #4 singles match to Raya Kosey of Superior.

Reilly Kedrowski and Savannah Hanson of CEC notched a #1 doubles win over Christine Johnstad and Bettye Nelson. Also, Kaylie Shevich and Asha Fritsinger took a #2 doubles victory over Sara Balcer and Stephanie Schais. CEC’s lone loss at double play was at #3 where Malyssa Brady and Liz Jezierski fell 6-3, 6-3 to Jolissa Gulindo and Keeley McCall.

With the 5-2 win over Superior, the Jacks are 1-0 on the season.
