Duluth Padres Win Two Games Against Ironwood-Hurley

DULUTH — The Duluth Padres won two Upper 13 League games against the Iron Rangers (Ironwood/Hurley) at Bulldog Park. The Padres won the first game 4-3 and took the second game 3-1. Both games were seven innings.

Game 1: Duluth Padres 4, Iron Rangers 3


Kevin Hendrickx hit a sacrifice fly that scored Tim Nylund with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Padres won the first game.


With the score knotted 1-1, Duluth plated two runs on an error and a passed ball to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Rangers tied the score 3-3 with two runs in the top of the seventh on two hits and an error.


Nylund hit a double with one out in the seventh and advanced to third on a single by Chris Musolf before scoring on Hendrickx’s fly.


Winning pitcher Anthony Bush (4-0, 1.02 ERA) allowed one earned run on eight hits and one walk in a complete game effort. He had six strikeouts. Bush’s streak of consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run was extended to 22.2 innings over four games before ending in the seventh inning.


Daulton Levra picked up the loss in relief of starter Josh Thiede. Levra allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk in one and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts. Thiede allowed one run on one hit, five walks, and a hit batsman in six innings. He had five strikeouts. Thiede and Levra combined on a three-hitter.


Ethan Buccanero and Jerry Levra had two hits each for the Rangers.

Game 2: Duluth Padres 3, Iron Rangers 1


Jesse Olson (2-3, 1.71 ERA) tossed a complete game four-hitter with one unearned run as the Padres took the second game to sweep the Rangers. Olson had eight strikeouts and three walks.


Duluth’s Matt Chruscielski hit a two-RBI triple in the top of the first inning and Tim Nylund hit an RBI single in the sixth to account for Duluth’s runs.

Tim Mattson scored on an RBI single by Dylan Laurin in the bottom of the first inning for the Rangers’ run.


Kevin Hendrickx had two hits for the Padres and Dylan Laurin had two hits for the Rangers.


Losing pitcher Tyler Gottschalk allowed two runs on two hits and five walks in three innings. He had five strikeouts.


Duluth (4-2 league, 8-9 overall) is at Port Wing on July 4 for an Upper 13 League game. The Iron Rangers (1-8 in league) are back in league action on July 8 when they host the Ashland Merchants.
